One of the easiest stretches is flexing your foot up and down 10 times prior to standing after a long period of rest (when plantar fasciitis pain is at its worst). What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, plantar fasciitis is the result. If you have plantar fasciitis you will have a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As the day progresses and you walk around more, this pain will start to disappear, but it will return after long periods of standing or sitting.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Having high arches in your feet
  • Other foot issues such as flat feet
  • Pregnancy (due to the sudden weight gain)
  • Being on your feet very often

There are some risk factors that may make you more likely to develop plantar fasciitis compared to others. The condition most commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60. It also tends to affect people who are obese because the extra pounds result in extra stress being placed on the plantar fascia.

Tinea pedis (athlete’s foot) is a very contagious, even sneaky, fungus. It can travel from an infected person’s foot onto a locker room floor, public shower or swimming pool area, and linger until it comes in contact with an unsuspecting pair of bare feet. Athlete’s foot can also transfer directly from person to person, or through contact with contaminated socks, towels and shoes. That is why it is very important to wear flip-flops in warm, moist communal areas and never share personal items with others. Tinea pedis loves to live in the dark, moist webbing between toes, causing a very itchy, scaly rash that can spread to other parts of the feet. These symptoms are often exacerbated by wearing tight shoes or sweaty socks for an extended period of time. A certain form of athlete’s foot can even produce painful blisters on the sole of the feet. As uncomfortable and itchy as these symptoms are, it is important to refrain from scratching, as the infection can spread to the hands and possibly lead to a bacterial infection. In some cases, this nasty infection will attack the toenails, causing them to thicken, crumble, become discolored and disintegrate. What Is Athlete’s Foot?

Tinea pedis, more commonly known as athlete’s foot, is a non-serious and common fungal infection of the foot. Athlete’s foot is contagious and can be contracted by touching someone who has it or infected surfaces. The most common places contaminated by it are public showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools. Once contracted, it grows on feet that are left inside moist, dark, and warm shoes and socks.

Prevention

The most effective ways to prevent athlete’s foot include:

  • Thoroughly washing and drying feet
  • Avoid going barefoot in locker rooms and public showers
  • Using shower shoes in public showers
  • Wearing socks that allow the feet to breathe
  • Changing socks and shoes frequently if you sweat a lot

Symptoms

Athlete’s foot initially occurs as a rash between the toes. However, if left undiagnosed, it can spread to the sides and bottom of the feet, toenails, and if touched by hand, the hands themselves. Symptoms include:

  • Redness
  • Burning

All About Haglund’s Deformity

Do you have a visible bony bump on the back of your heel? If so, you may have a Haglund’s deformity, an abnormality of the foot bone and surrounding soft tissues. Though often harmless, in some people, the deformity can cause pain due to the bony bump rubbing against shoes and irritating the soft tissues around it. This can lead to another condition called bursitis, which can make the deformity larger. The larger deformity, in turn, leads to more irritation and a cycle of pain. People who wear high heels or shoes with tight or rigid backs are at an increased risk of this condition. Conservative treatments for Haglund’s deformity include wearing shoes with open backs, heel pads, or orthotics, applying ice to the bumps, and taking over-the-counter pain medications. Causes of Heel Pain

What to Do if You Break a Toe

A broken toe usually involves something heavy dropping on it or stubbing it on a piece of furniture or another hard surface. The result is bruising and swelling that makes it difficult or impossible to wear shoes due to the pain. Frequently, the patient walks with a limp if they can walk at all. It can take up to 6 weeks for a broken toe to fully heal. Here are a few measures you can implement at home to help with the healing process. First, stay off the foot, and then wrap it to keep the swelling down. Keep ice on the affected toe and elevate it as often as possible. You also may need to take over-the-counter pain medication. Whether your toe is broken or sprained, it is a good idea to consult a podiatrist who can determine the severity of the injury. The foot specialist will take an X-ray and depending on the results, wrap the injured toe to toe next to it (known as buddy taping) as a splint for stabilization. A hard boot may be prescribed to keep the toe safe from further injury. Walking aids, such as crutches, may also be recommended to help keep weight off the toe. In severe cases, surgery may be required.
